Cheap Domain Names
For people to get to your website, they first have to enter your website’s domain name. The domain name should be a phrase denoting the name of the site, or giving an overview of what it’s about. Though you can get a domain name through a web hosting company, the domain names acquired this way are called “third level domain names.” Third level names include the name of the hosting site in them.
In other words, instead of having www.yourwebsite.com, you will have a domain name formatted like yourwebsite.hostwebsite.com. This gives you a longer, less memorable domain name. You will appear much more professional if you simply buy your own domain name. It really doesn’t cost that much anymore to do this.
Sometimes you’ll purchase a web hosting package that will include a domain name in the price, and sometimes you buy a domain name for around $10. But you can purchase a domain name by itself, without having to buy a web hosting package too and then host it on a WordPress or Blogger platform. This option is very inexpensive, too.
If you purchase an inexpensive domain name, you register it just like you do with any other domain name. First, you’ll have to check if the domain name you want is available. Usually you’ll type it into a text box with the extension you want and hit “search.” If the name isn’t already taken, and doesn’t have trademarked keywords within the domain name, you cah go ahead and purchase it. Otherwise, you’ll have to choose another domain name. Sometimes the domain name company will offer suggestions on domain names.
There can be hazards associated with cheap doman names. With dishonest domain name companies, you might pay for a name and never receive it. They may tell you that you have to wait a few days for the domain name to become active, but that day doesn’t come. Therefore it is important to choose a domain name provider that has a track record to uphold.
You can do this by checking to see if the domain name provider is registered with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB helps ensure that businesses are legitimate and operate above board. It is also a good idea to see if the company has contact information such as a real address (not a P.O. box) and a phone number. You can also check out message boards and forums to see if anyone has any dirt on a company, or if the company has a reputation for shady dealings. Of course, you can’t take everything you read on a forum at face value, but if you see a lot of people posting bad experiences with a particular company, then cross it off your list and move on.
If you find out that the cheap domain company is legitimate, then there’s no reason not to get your domain name at a discount. The company should operate like a regularly priced domain name provider, but most likely with less overhead cost.
